DP 343527

Description An oblique aerial view of Easter Ross croft land, at the west end of the Beauly Firth, looking S.

Date 8/4/2015

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 343527

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This extensive view shows croft land at the western end of the Beauly Firth, in Easter Ross. Just below the centre of the photo a long cairn, presumably Neolithic, shows as a long rectangle of rough grass. This cairn is 52m N-S, and is much degraded. Although it is mentioned in an 1816 survey of Mulbuie, it is not shown on 1st edition OS map. The remains of a dwelling are in the field above the road, above the cairn. In the R upper quarter is Muir of Ord, Windhill and then, distantly, Beauly. Numerous farmsteads seen in this image are in the archaeological record. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
