Description Aerial view of Inverness Royal Academy and Holm Farm residential area at Culduthel, Inverness, looking S.

Date 8/4/2015

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 343488

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content In the foreground of this image the new Inverness Royal Academy is under construction. A cist was found at a site in the lower left sector of the image. At lower right, the prominent house with two dormer windows is the former Culduthel Hospital (1917-1989) for infectious diseases, occupying a late 18th-C residence. The Holm Farm Road housing estate (upper right sector of image) overlies a rich archaeological site, with records of roundhouses, enclosure, furnace, metal-working, palisade, cremation and inhumation, ranging from Bronze Age to Pictish. In the small triangular housing estate just beyond Culduthel Mains Road, a possible Neolithic mortuary enclosure is recorded, with an enclosure ditch nearby. At County Houses, the older dwellings on the right-hand side of Culduthel Road, a sawmill was recorded on the 1st-edition OS map, while a "pond bay", which may be connected with it, is visible emerging from trees a little further up the road on the left. A roundhouse is recorded in the light brown field to left of the pond bay, with a row of white, semi-detached houses beyond. With the eye of faith, on enlargement, several circular marks are visible in the far left sector of this field. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
