Description Aerial view of central Inverness, looking NNW.

Date 22/7/2014

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 343355

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This is a very wide view of the centre of Inverness showing both east and west sides of the river. At top of picture (from left to right) is Dalneigh, Merkinch and South Kessock. Below the river is the Haugh, Inverness centre and the Longman. Millburn Academy (the present building dates from 2008) is just coming into view at bottom right and Fraser Park and Walker Park are at bottom left. The castle can be seen on its mound above the Ness Bridge. This present building dates from the C19 and very little relates to earlier structures. It functions as the Sheriff Court. To its left is Porterfield Prison, opened 1902, St. Andrews Cathedral (1866-69) and Eden Court Theatre, opened 1976, are on the river towards top left. The large building above Fraser Park is the Kingsmills Nursing Home, built on Kingsmills Park which was the home of Inverness Thistle Football Club, before amalgamating with Inverness Caledonian to form ICT in 1994. There are many sites of historical and archaeological interest within this area. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
