Description Aerial view of Stoneyfield and Beechwood, Inverness, looking S.

Date 22/7/2014

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 343342

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This general view of the development to the east of Inverness centres on Stoneyfield and Beechwood Farm where the UHI campus was being built. Beechwood Farm was built in the C19 and raised bulls for breeding purposes, but in 2010 it was identified as the ideal site for the new UHI campus. This was opened in 2015. Investigation ahead of development identified prehistoric remains. The large unit at bottom right is Howdens Garden Centre which developed from a seed shop opened in Inverness in 1801. Before moving to Stoneyfield it operated from nurseries in Telford Street. Stoneyfield House was built in 1780 as a smallholding and the Coach House was sold off in the early C20 and became a popular eating place. Inverness Retail Park, at bottom left, was opened at Wester Seafield in 1996. An excavation was carried out in advance of building and a Bronze Age cemetery was discovered. Raigmore is at centre right and Inshes at top left. The A9 runs from bottom right, disappearing into the distance at top left. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
