Scope and Content This close view focuses on the Old High Church at the north end of Church Street. Old High Church and its churchyard sits on St. Michael's Mount, supposedly the site of a church founded by St. Columba in the C6. The oldest part of the present building is probably C16, but the church was rebuilt in the late C18 and alterations were undertaken in the C19. Below the Old High Church is Greyfriars Free Church on Church Street, known as the Gaelic Church and built in 1792 on the site of an earlier church. It is now a second-hand bookshop. To the right is the telephone exchange building, which was built on the site of the Dominican Friary and opened in 1961. It now provides office space for rent. Chapel Yard cemetery is just coming into view at bottom right. St. Mary's Chapel was situated within the Chapel Yard but there is no sign of this building now. The Greig Street Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian crossing, linking Greig Street on the west side of the river and Bank Street on the east. It was opened in 1881. To the right of the bridge on the west side of the river is the C18 Balnain House which was restored in the 1980s and opened as a centre for Highland music. It is now used by the NTS. There are many sites of interest in the record in this area. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
