Scope and Content This is a close view of the Bridge Street development and Inverness Castle. Bridge Street was developed in the 1960s when the road was widened to accommodate the new Ness Bridge and this involved demolishing a number of historic buildings, including Queen Mary's House. The building on the north side of Bridge Street (bottom left) operated as the HQ of the HIDB (now HIE) before being redeveloped into luxury accommodation. On the other side of Bridge Street there are shops at ground level and on upper Bridge Street the three blocks originally housed the Crofters' Commission, the library and the museum. The Library moved to Farraline Park in 1980 and the Crofters' Commission relocated to Great Glen House in 2006. There is a record of a castle in Inverness going back to the C12 but this present building dates from the C19. Very little relates to earlier structures. It functions as the Sheriff Court (2020). The Town House sits beside the Bridge Street development on the south side. This was originally the town house of Lord Lovat which was demolished in 1878 and rebuilt to house the town Council of the royal Burgh of Inverness until local government reorganisation in 1975. The present building opened in 1882. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
