Scope and Content This is a close view of the centre of Inverness. The Old High Church and its churchyard on St. Michael's Mount is at bottom left. This is supposedly the site of a church founded by St. Columba in the C6. The oldest part of the present building is probably C16, but the church was rebuilt in the late C18 and alterations were undertaken in the C19. The Free North Church, built in 1873, is above the Old High Church and beside the Greig Street Bridge. Above it is St. Columba High Church, built 1851-52. The castle sits on its mound above the main bridge and though there is a record of a castle in Inverness going back to the C12, this present building dates from the C19. Very little relates to earlier structures. It functions as the Sheriff Court (2020). The Ness Bridge is the main crossing and replaced the earlier suspension bridge in 1961. The Greig Street Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian crossing, linking Greig Street on the west side of the river and Bank Street on the east. It was opened in 1881.
