Scope and Content This view focuses on Raigmore Hospital with the Inshes Retail Park and the Police HQ in the background. The hospital's original car park was put in the walled garden and the wall can be seen at centre right. Raigmore Hospital began as a facility under the Emergency Medical Scheme and took its first patients in 1941. Wards were built of brick in separate blocks. In 1962 plans for a new general hospital to serve Inverness were put in place and Phase 1 incorporating the Outpatients Department, laboratories, pharmacy and records, was completed in 1971. Phase 2 was opened in 1985, providing wards to replace the old blocks. A maternity unit was built on the site of the original wards in 1988. Maggie's Centre, was opened in 2005.
