Scope and Content The smelter at Fort William was built between 1921 and 1929 opening in 1930. The smelter uses hydroelectric power with water from the headwaters of the Spey being drawn through Loch Laggan and Loch Treig to the penstocks pictured top right. There are plans (2020) to build an alloy plant beside the factory. At the side of the smelter is the site of the Battle of Inverlochy in 1645 between Covenanters and Royalists. The Inverness to Fort William road (A82) crosses the bottom left of the photo. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
