Scope and Content The photo captures the southern tip of the runway (Airfield established during WW2) and across to the Connel Bridge which spans the Falls of Lora, whirl pools at the narrow entrance to Loch Etive. The Connel Bridge was opened for the Oban and Ballachulish Railway in 1903, later used by both trains and road traffic, then road traffic only after the closure of the line in 1963. The jetties for the ferry are just obvious to the right of the bridge. Behind the Connel Bridge and South Connel is the Black Lochs area which has early remains (cup-marked stones and cairns) and townships from the 17th and 18th century. Ben Cruachan is the peak in the top left with the Pass of Brander leading to freshwater Loch Awe just to its right. Also see http://www.wosas.net/wosas_site.php?id=1443.
