Scope and Content Mouth of Alness River (also known as Alness Point and River Averon) with Dalmore Pier built in WW1 (not visible on OS 1st and 2nd edition maps and known locally as 'Yankee Pier') to service US Naval Base 17, a mine-laying establishment, with traces of this camp visible at base of photo. Traces of sea defences and fishing stances (recorded as 'Fishing cairns' on later OS mapping) are also visible in this photo. The pier was not shown on OS 1st and 2nd edition maps and known locally after WW1, as the 'Yankee Pier'. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
