Aerial view of Cullodden Academy and Balloch, E of Inverness, looking E.

DP 342185

Description Aerial view of Cullodden Academy and Balloch, E of Inverness, looking E.

Date 30/5/2010

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 342185

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This is a view of Culloden Academy, at right of picture, and the village of Balloch to the left. Culloden Academy was established in 1978 and operated from Millburn Academy in Inverness for 4 years till this building was ready for occupation. Chapelton farm is towards the top of picture to right of centre, below Culloden Woods. This owes its name to St. Mary's Chapel which was situated in the field below the farm, but the Name Book in 1868 notes that 'no remains of this chapel at present exist'. Balloch was probably established as an estate village for the Culloden Estate, but has expanded considerably since the 1960s. Balloch Farmhouse can just be seen among the trees just above Culloden Academy and Upper Cullernie Farm is on the left of picture. The Primary School and Community Hall are just left of centre. There are several cropmarks in the fields towards the bottom of the photo and a well - Tobar nan Cleirach or Well of the Priests - gives its name to the section of the village immediately to the right of Upper Cullernie Farm. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
