Scope and Content This is a close view of Culloden House and its walled garden which can be seen in the centre of the photo. The Home Farm is just below the house and to its right. The stables are at centre right. Culloden Academy is to the left of Culloden House and Duncan Forbes Primary School, opened in 1977, is to the right of the walled garden, on Keppoch Road, which runs from lower right. Culloden House was the home of the Forbes family and built in 1776 on the site of an earlier building, remains of which can be seen in the cellar of the present house. It became a hotel in 1976. The home farm and stables have been converted into houses. Culloden Academy was established in 1778 and operated from Millburn Academy in Inverness for 4 years till this building was ready for occupation. Chapelton farm is at top centre. This owes its name to St. Mary's Chapel which was situated in the field below the farm, but the Name Book in 1868 notes that 'no remains of this chapel at present exist'.
