Scope and Content This view shows the N end of the Caledonian canal where it ends in the Beauly Firth. In the photo are a beacon, N Pier, Clachnaharry sea lock, Sea Lock House and railway bridge inland, and Inverness beyond. A linear feature is visible in the foreground. The canal was constructed in early 19C by Thomas Telford and completed in 1822. It is a scheduled monument and heavily used by commercial and leisure marine traffic.
