Scope and Content Ornate cast ironwork on the roof of the offices, Glenlochy Distillery, Fort William, Highland Glenlochy Distillery was built in the 1890s next to the River Nevis, and used water power in its early years. It was bought in 1953 by the Distillers Company Ltd, and distillery housing erected (which has now been converted to a guest house). The site lost its link to the rail network in the 1970s, and was closed in 1983. This shows the decorative ironwork forming a balustrade around the top of the single-storeyed offices, with the gable of the kiln extension behind. The iron is cast to form wavy panels and swirls within rectangular panels, and the corners are marked by raised flowers backed by a disc of leaves. Glenlochy was built at the height of the whisky boom of the 1890s, when banks were keen to fund distilleries due to a huge public demand for the spirit, particularly in blended form. The lavish ornamental details on the façade reflect the confidence in the future of distilling at this time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
