Scope and Content A collection of photographic copies of views of country houses and gardens, mostly in Scotland. It comprises copies of photographs and also watercolour sketches, evidently from a sketchbook 'Book of Visits' compiled in the course of visits and signed by hosts and guests. Subjects include Invercauld House, Kelburn Castle, Thurston House, Inverlochy Castle, Douglas Support, Ravenswood House, Eglinton Castle, Barncluith, Roshven House, Woodhouselee, Maudslie Castle, Newhailes, Castle Wemyss, Fairlie Craif, Kelburne Tower, Spitalhaugh House, Bandirran House, Cambusdoon House, Cowdenknowes House, Denmore House, Rossdhu House, Miss Jekyll's Garden, Godalming, Rosehall House, Ogscastle, Grianan House, Brahan Castle, Forglen House, Corriemoillie Lodge, Langley Park, Bamff House, and Kennet House. Also two views of the Militia Barracks, King Street, Aberdeen.
Archive History Lent to RCAHMS for copying as a Survey of a Private Collection in 1987 by Mr Walter Severn. Previously catalogued as Collection 262/980.

Administrative History Walter Severn, English watercolourist (1830-1904). A grandson of the 12th Earl of Eglinton and married to Mary Dalrymple, daughter of Sir Charles Dalrymple Fergusson, Severn's social connections allowed him to compile an illustrated 'Book of Visits' to country houses, c.1891-1902.
