Scope and Content Settlement at Knap of Howar, Papa Westray, Orkney This neolithic settlement is at Knap of Howar. Until is was excavated in the 1930s much of the site was hidden by 4 m of sand. The settlement consists of two structures and would have been a single-family farmstead. This is a view of the inner room of the structure which is believed to have been the kitchen area. The great quern stone still lies in the same spot where it was originally found. Many of the finds from the site are now in the RMS. These include bone and stone tools and fragments of a local pottery known as Unstan Ware. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
