Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Perth Airfield, Perth & Kinross During the war, the airfield was camouflaged, though the extent of the aerodrome is clearly shown on this photograph. Three hangar buildings are visible, annotated as 1, while the T-shaped control tower is marked as 2. This aerodrome was in use from 1936 until 1996, serving as a flying school. Although the Luftwaffe flew intelligence-gathering sorties throughout the war, the majority were flown in 1939 and 1940. These images show a broad range of sites, from industrial to military sites, including those, like this aerodrome, which could be of military value. Luftwaffe intelligence officers used aerial reconnaissance photographs to plan bombing sorties, to assess the damage caused by earlier raids and to gather information about the strength of defences. Taken during aerial reconnaissance by the Luftwaffe in 1939, this photograph shows Perth Airfield, known locally as Scone Aerodrome. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
