Administrative History Rex Wailes (1901-86), engineer, author and molinologist. Following an engineering apprenticeship, Wailes worked first for Robey's of Lincoln, and then for the family firm of George Wailes and Company. From the 1920s he began recording the disappearing technology of water- and wind-mills, working with the Newcomen Society and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. He published widely on the subject of mills, and on the wider subject of industrial archaeology: his books include: Tide Mills (1938?), Windmills in England: a study of their origin, development and future (1948), The English Windmill (1954), A Source Book of Windmills and Watermills (1979), A Source Book of the Industrial Past (1980).
