Scope and Content Settling tank from west, Pittyvaich Distillery, Dufftown, Moray Pittyvaich Distillery was built in 1975 by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd next to its sister distillery, Dufftown. The malt whisky produced here was first released onto the market in 1991, and also used in Bell's blends. After being mothballed in 1993, a trial run of gin production was attempted in 1994. The site is now used for testing new barleys. This shows a settling tank used for breaking down harmful residues in the waste water from the distillery before it is returned to the burn. The tank features a revolving spraying arm, walkway for maintenance staff, and hundreds of flower-shaped plastic discs which increase the surface area of the tank, allowing microbes to break down the effluent more efficiently. Distilleries are now subject to controls which limit the amount of pollutants they may legally be allowed to pump back into the burns and springs from which they draw their water. Monitoring of the effects pollution has upon aquatic and marine life has led to tighter controls upon the disposal of effluent (liquid waste) from many industries.
