Administrative History Dr Ian Melvin Smith was a field investigator with RCAHMS, 1984-94. A graduate of the University of Durham, he specialized in the archaeology of the early medieval period and in ecclesiastical archaeology. His thesis studied early medieval settlement in the Borders. He also directed an excavation of a Borders hillfort, at the Dod. In 1984 he joined RCAHMS as a field investigator, at first working on the field monuments rapid survey programme, and later with the National Archaeological Survey. He died in a walking accident while on the island of Canna in 1994.
