Scope and Content Earth-house at Grain, Kirkwall, Orkney This earth-house is at Grain. It is very well preserved due to it being over 2 m below ground. The site was discovered in the 19th century. In 1982 a second earth-house was found nearby but is no longer visible. This is a plan of the oval chamber and passage. It is lined with drystone walls and has a flat lintelled roof. This is supported by 4 free-standing stone pillars. It was probably used as a storage cellar. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
