SC 1970225

Description Aerial view of Arbuthnott House and Designed Landscape, near Inverbervie, Aberdeenshire, looking N.

Date 10/1980

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1970225

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Arbuthnott House, just R of centre, was originally a rectangular tower-house dated 1588, and considerably extended in 1660, 1754 and 1810. It now presents no external appearance of antiquity. However, beneath the tower-house and the outbuildings to the NE are barrel-vaulted chambers, considered to incorporate earlier 14th century masonry. The house, which is still occupied, is believed to occupy the site of a motte. There is much of archaeological interest in the grounds and farmland about. Home or Mains Farm is seen further left of centre. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
