Scope and Content Fort at Ness of Burgi, South Mainland, Shetland The fort at Ness of Burgi is built on a rocky headland. The SW part of the site has been destroyed by erosion, but the remains of the blockhouse itself are in good condition. In front of the ramparts is a rectangular mound of stones which is modern. This is a view of the blockhouse. In front of it is a large rampart with a ditch on either side. The entrance passage in the middle still has several of its original roof lintels. He blockhouse has three cells inside it and has been partly restored. The fort was excavated in 1935. A little pottery and bone, associated with fireplaces, was all that was found.
