Scope and Content Broch at Midhowe, Rousay, Orkney The Broch of Midhowe on Rousay is built on a small promontory. The outer defences are confined to the landward side. A sea wall was built during the 1930s to put an end to the erosion which had destroyed part of the W side of the site. This is a view of the entrance to the broch. The massive lintel is still in place. The skill of the masons can also be seen with the neatly faced outer wall of the broch. Many finds from the site are now in the Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, with metalwork, jewellery and a number of bone and stone tools. A Roman bronze ladle was probably acquired through trading or raiding and not by direct contact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
