Scope and Content The Meikle Ferry pier is on the point of land, middle L of the photo. It was a historic passenger crossing of the Dornoch Firth. In the early C19 it was a large boat capable of transporting carriages, horses and cattle, but on 16th August 1809 the ferry sank with the loss of 99 lives. This prompted the building of a bridge up river at Bonar. The ferry continued operating till 1957. There is also a pier at Newton Point, slightly to the right above Meikle Ferry. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
