Oblique aerial view of settlement at Little Rogart, Sutherland, looking NW.

SC 1903270

Description Oblique aerial view of settlement at Little Rogart, Sutherland, looking NW.

Date 2000

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1903270

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The image shows a rich archaeological landscape on a ridge east of the Garbh Allt, known in the 19th-C as Rogart Park, with extensive areas of rig and furrow. "On a low ridge of pasture surrounded by bog on two sides there is a township, a nineteenth century farmstead and field, five hut-circles, a burnt mound, and a field-system." (Canmore). The 19th-C farmstead, with roofed farmhouse, and rectangular field are clearly visible near centre of image. Beyond is a further field system. Earlier structures on the ridge are less discernible in this view, although two features resembling hut circles can be seen. In lower left sector an oval enclosure is visible, with the fainter, adjoining remains of a longhouse (1 of 6 at Little Rogart). A 19th-C firing range, at least 800 yards in length, was located more or less parallel to the straightened watercourse occupying the righthand side of the image. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
