Scope and Content This image shows the heart of modern Inverness. The 1881 suspension bridge to the left carries a footpath over the River Ness. At the end is the Free North, Free Church Of Scotland designed by Ross and Macbeth, 1890-93. To its left is the Old High Kirk and graveyard, the present parish church. It was built in 1770, but its steeple is of unknown age and was possibly part of the old Church of St. Mary, which stood on the spot in the days of Wallace and Bruce. To the left of the Old High Kirk is the former 20c telephone exchange. At the right of the photo is the concrete 3 span Ness bridge 1959-61, which replaced the Ness suspension Bridge. There are numerous references to buildings on the water front. In the foreground to the right is the inland Revenue Office. Left by the suspension Bridge is the Roman Catholic Junior and Secondary School (listed). Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
