Scope and Content In the centre of the photo behind the storage tanks are the scant remains of Cromwell's Fort or Citadel built in 1652-8. It was pentagonal with ramparts and bastions, with a wet ditch on four sides and the river its on fifth. The clock tower still remains. On restoration of Charles II it was demolished at request of the Highland Chiefs in 1662. The area is now covered with petrol and oil installations. In the front is Inverness harbour.
