Scope and Content Sandside Bay is on the north coast and is popular with surfers. The nearby village of Reay was created a Burgh of Barony in 1628 and on the coast to the NE, the nuclear power station at Dounreay was established in 1955. This facility was developed during the period 1955-1994 and is now being decommissioned. There are several sites of archaeological and historic interest in this area indicating settlement going back to prehistoric times.
