Scope and Content Helmsdale developed as a fishing port in the early 1800's as people were cleared from further inland to the coast. The Harbour at the right of the photo is at the mouth of the River Helmsdale. It was built for the Duke of Sutherland in 1818 by John Rennie to serve the fishing industry, and rebuilt in 1890. There are fisher Cottages and the ruins of fish curing houses nearby. The original harbour was further upstream, some of it under the line of the 1972 bridge, which carries the A9 over the river. To the left is the old Helmsdale Bridge, built 1808-9, designed by engineer Thomas Telford. Further left is the Cemetery, and the site of St. John The Baptist's Chapel, of which little remains. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
