Scope and Content Cromarty became a Royal Burgh in the C13 and many of the buildings are of historical significance. The harbour was begun in 1785 and adapted for military use in 1914 with the building of the Admiralty Pier. The ferry from Nigg uses the slipway to the east of the harbour. Cromarty House, which is at lower left, was built in 1772 to replace the mediaeval Castle and the walled garden, which is skirted by the Causeway, is the original approach from the town to the castle. Cromarty House Stables are at bottom left. Reed's Field, at bottom centre, was the focus of an excavation from 2013-2016 as part of the Cromarty Mediaeval Burgh Project and C12 remains of the original village were uncovered. The Gaelic Chapel, which is just above centre, was built in 1783 but is now roofless. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
