Scope and Content A general view of the town of Helmsdale. To the right of the river above centre is the cemetery with the foundations of the medieval chapel of St John the Baptist. Left across the river and just to the left of the top left corner of the golf course are the ruins of alms-houses which served as barracks during the twentieth century. Towards the top of the photograph the nineteenth century arched road bridge can be seen and beyond it the later A9 bridge for the town's bypass and the harbour.
