Administrative History Alexander Nasmyth, artist (1758-1840). Born in Edinburgh, Nasmyth was educated at the Royal High School and the Trustees Drawing Academy. He worked as an assistant for the portrait artist, Allan Ramsay, before setting up as a portraitist in his own right. Finding insufficient demand for portraiture, Nasmyth turned to landscape painting, often with a focus on real locations, and to the design of landscape features such as the temple of St Bernard's Well, Edinburgh, and the bridge at Almondell, West Lothian. One of the drawings in this small collection records him working with his sons on making a model of Craigmillar Castle.
