Scope and Content Mingary Castle is in the centre of the photo, occupying a commanding position on the edge of Loch Sunart. A great stronghold of the Lords of the Isles, it dates from 13c, built by a descendent of Somerled. It was later a seat of the Mclans of Ardnamurchan. The Castle eventually ended up in the possession of James Riddell, who acquired Mingary Castle in the late 18th century; the Castle was abandoned in the mid 19th century. Since the photo was taken it was restored in 2018-19 at a cost of £2.3million. It is currently (2020) a luxury hotel. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
