Scope and Content The village of Portknockie was founded in 1677, apparently named after the two rugged headlands at lower centre of image, Port Hill and Green Castle (mid-centre foreground), only the landward end of which is visible in the photo. Green Castle has Bronze Age pits, and is the site of a timber-laced promontory fort dating back to the Iron Age. These exposed headlands were also used for fish-drying. There is a 20th-C pillbox/observation post at the seaward end of Port Hill. The Harbour, built in 1890, was a busy fishing port and craft of the Zulu type were built there.
