SC 1867649

Description Near overhead aerial view of central range of Covesea Caves, near Lossiemouth, Moray, looking SW.

Date 1999

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1867649

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The image shows some of the many sea caves penetrating the New Red Sandstone cliffs between Lossiemouth and Hopeman. The Sculptor's Cave, at right hand end of beach in lower right sector of photo, has Pictish rock art and has yielded human remains, consistent with ritual use of the site, and numerous small finds, some dating as far back as the Bronze Age. Further to the right, the records for the Covesea Caves include human remains, flints, metal-working and Bronze Age pottery. The Caves were excavated by Ian Armit and a team from Bradford University in 2015-2018. At lower left corner of image (not recorded on Pastmap) a wall with window openings and doorway has been built across a cave mouth. The conspicuous white tower is a disused Coastguard lookout, while an unfinished millstone carved from a boulder was found on the shore nearby. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
