Aerial view of Cromarty and Nigg, Cromarty Firth, looking NW.

SC 1867202

Description Aerial view of Cromarty and Nigg, Cromarty Firth, looking NW.

Date 1996

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1867202

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This is a very distant view of the Cromarty Firth, showing Cromarty town and the Fabrication Yard at Nigg. Cromarty became a Royal Burgh in the C13 and many of the buildings are of historical significance. There are records of a military camp on the fields to the south west of the town. And there are military remains on the Sutors (centre right). The oil rig construction yard opened in Nigg Bay in 1972. By 2010 as a result of the downturn in the market, the yard was mothballed but in 2011 it gained a new lease of life as a hub for the energy industry, now (2020) constructing wind turbines. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
