Description Aerial view of Brora, East Sutherland, looking SW.

Date 1994

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Scope and Content Brora was developed in the C19 when the harbour was built by the Sutherland Estate. Salt pans operated on the shore towards top left in three distinct phases - 1598-1617, 1767-1777, and 1812-1828 and between 2007 and 2011 an excavation on the site of the old and new salt works was undertaken. The golf course lies to the north of the harbour (bottom of picture) and was established in 1891 as a 9 hole course, extended to 18 holes in 1900. To the right of the clubhouse is the Royal Marine Hotel, behind which is the former ice rink - the northernmost ice rink in Scotland. This was built in 1985 but closed in 2006. The radio station at centre left was built in 1939 and used as a tracking station in WW2. It closed in 1984. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
