Scope and Content North Brora Muir is to the west of Brora itself and has evidence of historic settlement. It's also the site of industrial activity. At bottom right is the site of the colliery, the only Jurassic coal mine in Scotland. It was established in 1811-1814 and the pit-head gear was finally demolished in 1970. Also in this area is the site of the brick and tile works following the discovery of a source of suitable clay. They operated from 1814-1826 and then again from 1873-1970s. The Brora Heritage Centre is situated on the rise above these sites - just out of picture. On the other side of the River Brora outlined by a stand of trees is Castle Hill and the suggested site of a motte and bailey castle, though the record notes that there is no evidence for an early castle on this site. Loch Brora can be seen towards top centre. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
