Scope and Content This view embraces the central part of the Sleat peninsula, including a crofting landscape and the policies of Armadale Castle, historic seat of the Macdonalds of Sleat. At lower left are the crofts of Calligarry, and the settlements of Ardvasar and Armadale, with its ferry pier. Near the junction of the pier road and the road to Ardvasar is a cemetery dating at least to the Bronze Age, and with standing stones on the site. Nearby is the site of a Neolithic chambered cairn [subsequently cleared and recorded in 2009-10 [in fulfilment of a planning condition]. Across the small cove from the ferry pier can be seen the Armadale Castle pier. The wooded slopes above include the policies of Armadale Castle, a Gothick-style mansion built in 1800-1801 for Alexander, 2nd Lord Macdonald. Bankruptcy followed in the 1820s and the building is now a stabilised shell. Ancillary buildings include the Stables, Home Farm, and Walled Garden. An orchard is recorded at Armadale in the late 17th-C. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
