Scope and Content This view shows the boundary of the built-up area on the south side of Inverness in 1991. The IRA is towards top left having moved to this building at Culduthel in 1977. It has since been replaced on the same site. Rollerbowl is below it and the buildings towards the bottom centre of the picture are on the site of Balloan Farm. This includes Culduthel Court which is the large building at the top of this estate. Lochardil is the area on the right of picture. The Lochardil estate was developed for housing in the 1960s and the Primary School, which is on the right, was opened in 1964. To the left of Lochardil Primary School, towards top of picture, is Holm Primary School, which was opened in 1974. Among the trees to the right of the IRA is the site of Culduthel Hospital. The hospital closed in 1989 and the main house was converted to residential accommodation. The rural area to the left of picture was excavated ahead of development and an extensive prehistoric landscape was uncovered.
