Scope and Content Brora is a village on the east coast of Sutherland. It has a history of coal mining and salt making and between 2007 and 2011 the buildings associated with the salt pans were excavated. A harbour was developed by the Sutherland Estates c. 1814. There are three bridges just above the centre of the photo. From R to L, the railway bridge was built in 1870-71. The old road bridge is hard to see on this photo. It has a date stone with 1801 and 1920 inscribed on it and it probably replaced an earlier bridge. The new road bridge sits beside it and was opened in the late C20. Towards top left is Brora Primary School which was opened as the High School in 1962. The secondary department was closed in 1985, after which secondary education for Brora pupils is provided by Golspie High School. At bottom left is the radio station, established in 1939 and closed in 1986. At centre right is the Royal Marine Hotel which was built as a private house in 1911-14. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
