Description Aerial view of Inverie Bay, Knoidart, Wester Ross, looking E.

Date 1990

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1864434

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Inverie Bay, north of Mallaig and Loch Morar, continues to the R (E) as Loch Nevis. Behind the Bay lies the community of Inverie, sustained by boat alone without a road, and the mountainous peninsula of Knoidart behind. In the foreground a Mesolithic shell midden is recorded in the sandy bay just left of centre. There are numerous buildings and features of archaeological interest along the length of the bay. The silted area across the Bay, up L of centre, is the site of Inverie House, not clearly visible in this photo. This large mansion started in the C18 and has been much altered since. Situated at the S end of Inverie village, and owned by Lord Brocket in 1940, the House was requisitioned during the Second World War for use in training Special Operations Executive personnel in clandestine warfare in Europe. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
