Description Aerial view of mouth of the River Ness at Inverness, looking E.
Date 1988
Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland
Catalogue Number SC 1863122
Category On-line Digital Images
Scope and Content This is a view of the mouth of the River Ness with Inverness Harbour and the Longman Industrial estate on its left bank and South Kessock on the right bank. The Western Breakwater is to the right of the mouth of the river and just off-shore and visible at low tide are the remains of a cairn (Cairn Arc) which is believed to have been erected as a warning to shipping. South Kessock Pier is at the bottom of the photo. The Kessock Ferry operated between South Kessock and North Kessock on the Black Isle from the C15, at least, until the opening of the Kessock Bridge in 1982 when the ferry became redundant. The last ferry – the ‘Rosehaugh’ – was moved to serve the Corran ferry near Fort William. Raigmore hospital is very prominent towards top centre. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
