Scope and Content The Caledonian canal completed by Telford in 1822 is on the left. To The left is the site of Torvaine Battle 1187, between Donald Bane and a party from Inverness Castle. Where the canal and river Ness merge in the immediate foreground there is a weir and Holm Mills water and woollen mill. Above this the wooded area is Tomnahurich cemetery. In the centre on the left bank of the river Ness on the flat area is Whin Park, the site of a substantial Neolithic settlement. In the centre of the photo in the middle of the river is Ness Island with General Well's Suspension Bridge 1833-34. The Moray Firth and Kessock Bridge are in the far distance.
