Date 1985

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1863077

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content In the foreground is the Muirton Basin at the north end of the Caledonian canal, completed by Telford in 1822. To the right are the 4 Muirton Locks, shown on the 1st edition OS. The A862 crosses the canal on the bridge built in 1935 by Sir William Arrol & co, this replaced an earlier bridge built in 1816. After crossing the canal the road continues into Inverness as Telford Street, with two large distilleries on either side of the road - Glen Albyn Distillery on the L (W) and Glen Mohr Distillery on the R. A branch railway ran along the east side of the Muirton basin. During WW1 there was a US submarine depot in that area. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
