Scope and Content In the foreground is the Caledonian with 4 locks at Muirton and Muirton basin to the left, completed by Telford in 1822 and shown on the 1st edition OS. Beyond is the Merkinch area of Inverness. In the middle of the photo is the river Ness. The bridge at the left is the 11 span railway viaduct built by Joseph Mitchell, washed away in 1989. To the right is Waterloo Bridge and to the right of that Friar's Bridge, a 3 span concrete bridge built in 1992 to carry the A82 over the river Ness.
