Scope and Content Mallaig from north-west, Highland Mallaig is a large fishing village overlooking the Sound of Sleat. It stands at the end of the famous 'Road to the Isles' and became prosperous when it became the terminus of the West Highland Railway from Fort William in 1901. Today, ferries leave from the pier for Skye, the Small Isles, and the Knoydart peninsula. This shows the ferry terminus (left) and the fishing boats within the harbour (centre). Centre left can be seen the curve of the railway line which brought the town its early prosperity and continues to be used today. The houses on the left are part of a late 20th century development built at Coteachan. A bypass was constructed in 1988 to ease congestion in the centre of the village. The West Highland Railway was originally planned to end at Roshven, on the south shore of Loch Ailort. However, the landowner could not agree terms with the company and Mallaig was developed instead. A thriving port developed and a steamer pier was opened in 1901, coinciding with the opening of the railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
