Administrative History Glasgow's growth in the nineteenth century demanded a reliable source of clean water for both human consumption and industrial uses. In the 1850s an aqueduct was constructed to bring water from Loch Katrine to the city, the system being inaugurated by Queen Victoria in 1859. This was subsequently expanded to meet increased demand, with a second intake completed in 1885, and a new aqueduct in 1901. Thomas Annan (1829-87), photographer. Born in Fife, Annan was apprenticed as a lithographer and engraver in Cupar before moving to Glasgow in 1849. Working at first as an engraver, by 1855 he had moved into calotype photography. Much of his earliest work deals with architectural subjects, such as the buildings of Glasgow Old College (1866), recorded shortly before their demolition, and the slum areas of the city centre (1872 and 1878), ahead of their clearance and redevelopment. In 1877 he published 'Photographic views of Loch Katrine, and some of the principal works constructed for introducing the water of Loch Katrine to the city of Glasgow'.
